Arcanobacterium haemolyticum was first described by MacLean et al. in 1946 ( 26) as a pathogen in cases of exudative pharyngitis and soft-tissue infections. In 1982 the previously named Corynebacterium haemolyticum was included in a new genus to reflect major differences in cell wall components and chemotaxonomic characters, the genus Arcanobacterium ( 10 ).
